This is the latest addition to a series of crypto crowdfunding campaigns to gain scrutiny from a growing audience.

Late Saturday, the Spice DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization that owns a copy of the unpublished manuscript of Frank Herbert and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unfinished Dune film, announced its roadmap. Future. In Tweet, Spice Knife speak it will “Publicize the book, produce an original limited-edition animated series inspired by the book, and sell it to a streaming service and support derivative projects from the community.” The group had previously won a Christie’s auction in November for a replica selling price of €2.66 million, about 89 times its estimated price in the middle.
However, there is only one problem, buying a copy of a book does not grant the buyer the copyright to it. In the United States and European Union, copyright typically lasts for the lifetime of the last living co-creator and for an additional 70 years after their death. Currently, the copyright holders Jean Giraud and HR Giger have passed away, and Jodorowsky is still in good shape at the age of 92.
Twitter users and crypto enthusiasts seem to react to the post with mockery. One particularly ‘barbarian’ user named @TheNinjaWhippet responded with a link to a free and publicly accessible copy of the book, which has existed online since 2011. The post was obtained attracted more than 3,500 likes.

Under copyright law, the Spice DAO must get a co-creator’s consent before creating an animated series inspired by the book and selling it to a streaming service, or wait 70 years after Jodorowsky’s death when The work is placed in the public domain. In addition, there is a lot of uncertainty about whether copies can be resold at par, as auctions require works to be assessed by an appraiser to determine their value.
